What The Living Word keeps, what it sends, and what it never touches.

The short version. The Living Word app does not have accounts, does not collect analytics, and does not send your reading anywhere. Your notes, highlights, bookmarks and studies are written to your own device and stay there. We cannot read them. Nobody at Emmaus Road Publications can see what you read, when you read it, or what you wrote in the margin — not because we promise not to look, but because it never reaches us.

The app stores the following in your device's own storage. None of it is transmitted, backed up to us, or visible to anyone but you.

You can export all of it from Settings, and you can wipe all of it from Settings. Deleting the app removes it too. There is no copy anywhere else.
Nothing. There is no analytics package in this app. There is no advertising identifier, no tracking pixel, no crash-reporting service, and no third-party software development kit collecting behaviour in the background. We do not build a profile of you, because we do not receive anything to build one from.
Reading is free forever, and so are your own notes and highlights. If you subscribe, there are two possible routes and they differ in what we see.
Bought in the app, through Apple's App Store or Google Play. The purchase is handled entirely by the store — never by us. We never see your card, your billing address, or your name. What the app receives is a validated receipt confirming a subscription is active, and that receipt is what unlocks the study layer. Apple and Google each have their own privacy practices for the payment itself, governed by their policies rather than this one.
Bought directly from this website. The payment is handled by Paddle, which acts as the merchant of record — meaning they are the seller for that transaction. We never see your card details. What we do receive, and what we could not do without, is your email address and the fact that a subscription is active and until when. That is the record that unlocks the study layer on this route, and it is the minimum needed to give you what you paid for. It is not used for anything else.
Ezra is the study guide inside the app. What happens to your question depends on which part of Ezra you are using.
Ezra searches the text that is already on your device and answers from it. Your question is handled locally. Nothing is sent anywhere, nothing is recorded, and no outside service — including any language model — receives your question or your reading.
This is a deliberate limit, not an oversight. A study guide that has to phone a server in order to answer is a study guide that knows what you asked.
Every Ezra answer carries a Flag this answer control. Using it writes the question, the answer as it was shown to you, the reason you chose and the time to your own device — the most recent fifty are kept, and nothing is transmitted at that point.
You are then offered a Send it to us button. That opens your own email app with the report already written, addressed to info@emmausroadpublications.org. Nothing reaches us unless you send it yourself, and you can read and edit it first. If you never send it, it stays on your device and we never learn it existed.
The crisis responses below carry no flag control at all.
Ezra carries a small number of fixed responses for moments of crisis. That path is hard-coded. It does not consult a model, it does not check your subscription, and it is never logged, never counted, and never transmitted. It is the one part of the app that is deliberately incapable of reporting anything about you.
If you make a verse card using your own photograph, the app reads the image you select in order to place the verse on it. The image is processed on your device and is never uploaded to us or to anyone else. The app does not browse your photo library; it receives only the single image you hand it.
Chapter pages currently request their typefaces from Google Fonts, which means your device makes a request to Google in order to draw the text. Google may log that request as it would any web request. The text of Scripture, your notes, and everything else described on this page stay where they are; only the fonts are fetched.
The app is intended for readers aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age — but the rating reflects that the study material and the guide are written for an older reader.
Because your information never leaves your device, you already hold every right that privacy law is designed to give you. You can see all of it, export all of it, and destroy all of it, without asking us and without waiting on us. This page explains how.
If that ever stops being true — if a future version of the app introduces accounts, groups, or anything stored on a server — this policy will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described in plain words rather than buried in a revision date.
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes and the change is stated plainly. We will not quietly widen what we collect.
